GET STARTED

Let's get your family set up.

Real-time driving safety for your teen, from TRUCE Family®. The phone is the brain; the camera is the eye. Most families finish the app setup in about 10 minutes, plus a few minutes to mount the camera.

Download the app

Install TRUCE Family on your phone and your teen's phone. It is free, on iOS and Android.

Set up in 4 steps

1

Create your account

Open TRUCE Family and create your account. Allow the permissions it asks for. Not installed yet? Use the buttons above.

TRUCE Family sign in screen with an email field and a Sign up with Family Invite Code button TRUCE Family Location permission screen explaining that location access enables device restrictions and family location sharing

Set Location to Always. This is what lets trips record.

2

Add your teen

On My Family, tap Add Family Member and choose Child. Tap Share Invite Code and send it to your teen. On their phone they install the app, tap Log In with Family Invite Code, and set Location to Always (Android: Allow all the time).

This step needs your teen's phone too. If they are not with you, send the invite code now and finish the rest when you are together. Setting Location to Always on their phone is what lets trips record.

TRUCE Family does not read your teen's messages, photos, or browsing.

Share the code, then enter it on your teen's phone.

3

Add the camera

In the app, open Cameras and tap Add Camera. Tap Scan camera QR code and scan the label on the camera, or enter the details manually. Name it and save it to your family.

After you add the camera, your teen should show Needs Setup or Ready in the app. If they do not, add a Driving Restriction ruleset to their profile.

Add Rule, choose the recommended Quick rule, then the teen shows Needs Setup.

Mount, power up, and finish

Mount the camera and connect its power through the camera beacon (see Mounting and Power and wiring below), then start the vehicle so the camera powers on. On your teen's phone, open the camera and tap Live View + Set Up on This Phone. You will see the live picture when it is connected.

That's it. You're set up. On your teen's next drive, the trip records automatically. You will get video clips and a Drive Score in your app a few minutes after each trip ends.

Allow Bluetooth and Local Network, then Join the camera Wi-Fi.

Mounting the camera

Place the camera

Mount it by the rearview mirror, low enough that the mirror does not block the driver-facing lens. Clean that spot with the included alcohol wipe so it sticks well.

Mount the beacon

Place the camera beacon right next to the camera. On the windshield or on the rearview mirror housing both work well. Keep it close so the cable reaches the camera, then tuck the wiring up into the headliner so nothing dangles.

Hide the cable

Tuck it into the headliner and down the A-pillar with the included plastic trim tool. Route it behind the airbag, never across it.

Tidy the slack

Zip-tie any extra cable up under the dash so nothing dangles near the pedals or the wheel. See Power and wiring below for how the camera connects through the camera beacon.

Safety: Never route a cable across an airbag panel. If the airbag deploys it can pull the wire loose or injure a passenger. Always run it behind the trim.

Power and wiring

The camera is powered through the camera beacon, not directly. Connect the parts in this order:

Power is USB-C (5V) through the camera beacon. The camera beacon also provides the Bluetooth link to your teen's phone.

What to expect

When your teen drives, TRUCE Family detects the trip automatically from their phone. No buttons to press. The camera adds video and sharper coaching. After each trip you get video clips and a Drive Score in your app.

Your subscription: Coaching, video history, and the parent dashboard are part of your TRUCE Family plan. Your camera includes your first 30 days of Premium service, then $12.99 per month. Cancel anytime in the app.

Three tips for smooth running

Location = Always

On your teen's phone, set TRUCE Family's location to Always (Android: Allow all the time). This is what lets trips record automatically.

Let it run

Keep notifications on and let the app run in the background. On Android, turn off battery optimization for TRUCE Family.

No video clips?

Have your teen start the car, then open Live View once before their next trip. That reconnects the camera so clips record.

Troubleshooting

Account and invite code

My teen's invite code does not work
Invite codes can expire. In the parent app, open My Family, select your teen, and tap Share Invite Code to send a fresh one. On their phone they tap Log In with Family Invite Code and enter it.
Setup will not finish
Almost always a missing permission. Work through the permission list for your phone type below, then reopen the app.
My teen does not show Needs Setup or Ready
Open your teen's profile and add a Driving Restriction ruleset to their profile. Their status should then change to Needs Setup or Ready.

Permissions: iPhone (iOS)

What permissions does iPhone need?
Location: Always (Settings > TRUCE Family > Location > Always). "While Using" is not enough. Notifications on. Screen Time allowed when prompted (it adjusts app access during driving and school). For the camera: allow Local Network and Bluetooth.

Permissions: Android

What permissions does Android need?
Location: Allow all the time. Notifications on. Usage access enabled. Display over other apps allowed. Battery optimization off for TRUCE Family so it runs in the background. For the camera: allow Bluetooth and Nearby devices.

Camera and Live View

The camera QR will not scan
The QR is a printed sticker on the camera, so it does not need power to scan. Make sure the label is clean and well lit, or tap to enter the Wi-Fi details manually.
Live View will not connect
Start the car so the camera powers on. The phone connects to the camera's own Wi-Fi, so confirm the camera permissions above are allowed, then open the camera and tap Live View + Set Up on This Phone.
It used to work and now asks me to set up again
Phone setup refreshes about every 30 days. When the app shows Refresh Setup on This Phone, have your teen open the camera and tap it.

Trips and Drive Score

No trips or Drive Score are showing
Confirm the teen's Location is Always / Allow all the time, the app can run in the background (Android: battery optimization off), and they are signed in. Trips record from the phone even without the camera; the camera adds video and richer coaching.

Subscription and features

Why is coaching or video history locked?
Coaching, video history, and the parent dashboard are part of your TRUCE Family plan. If your first 30 days of Premium service have ended, open the app to manage or restart your plan.
